This neighborhood actually started out as the back lot of 20th Century Fox, a prominent American film company. This studio experienced a series of box-office flops and needed to compensate for lost money. To do this, they sold the area to William Zeckendorf and the Aluminum Company of America who designed and planned Century City to be a “city in a city.” The first building in this neighborhood was the Century City Gateway West, one of Los Angeles’ most recognizable buildings. Recently, Century City was known for its Shubert Theatre, which once hosted many famous and award-winning plays and musicals.

Century City is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which has 658 schools, 219 of which are on a year-round calendar with the remaining 438 on a traditional school calendar. Some of these schools include Westwood Charter Elementary School, Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School, and University High School. Many of these schools offer music programs in addition to the regularly required curriculum, and give students the opportunity to audition for the All District High School Honor Band. This selective band performs in numerous events, such as Bandfest at Disneyland and has been performing in the Tournament of Roses Parade since 1973.

Century City is close to golf courses, the Hillcrest Country Club and the Rancho Park Golf Course. In addition to these spots, Century City is approximately 20 minutes away from the Santa Monica State Beach and Venice City Beach, for those who want to spend their weekends away from the city. For those who want to venture into the city, Century City is only 13 miles away from the center of Los Angeles.
